Ordering food in France

steak frites

There really is no need to get all nervous about ordering food here in the Dordogne.  As a tourist area most restaurant and bar staff do speak some English (although they love it if you try and speak a little French).  Some restaurant menus have English descriptions underneath the French.  If you really get stuck, ‘steak frites’ will get you a beefsteak with chips.  Asking for it ‘Bien cuit’ will normally get it arriving either well done or medium.  If you want a pint to drink with it order your beer ‘grande’. ‘Excusez moi madame or monsieur’ is much more appreciated than calling the waiter ‘garcon’ (boy).  The food in this area is produced with care, so enjoy – or ‘Bon appetite!’
